What is an olecranon fracture?
An olecranon fracture is a break in the bony tip of the elbow joint, part of the upper arm bone, which forms part of the ulna bone and is crucial for arm movement. This type of fracture typically occurs from a direct blow to the elbow, such as in a fall or a collision, or indirectly through sudden triceps muscle contraction, which can forcibly pull the olecranon and cause it to fracture.
Causes
The most common causes of an olecranon fracture include falls directly onto the elbow or outstretched hand, which absorb impact forces through the forearm to the elbow. Sports-related injuries and vehicle accidents also frequently result in these types of fractures. In some cases, it can occur from repetitive stress or overuse, particularly in sports that involve throwing motions.
Symptoms
Symptoms of an olecranon fracture, often impacting the distal humerus and radial head, include severe pain, swelling, and bruising around the elbow. The individual may also experience a noticeable decrease in the ability to move the elbow. In some severe cases, there can be an obvious deformity if the bone fragments are displaced, and the skin may even be punctured in open fractures. Numbness or decreased sensation in the hand might also indicate nerve damage associated with the fracture.
